Extravagant Lovers

"Watch what God does, and then you do it, like children who learn proper behavior from their parents. Mostly what God does is love you. Keep company with him and learn a life of love. Observe how Christ loved us. His love was not cautious but extravagant. He didn’t love in order to get something from us but to give everything of himself to us. Love like that." -Ephesians 5:1-2, MSG As a fairly new parent, I've learned that what I say and do in front of Emarosa is constantly watched and learned by this little toddler. She mimics me because she looks up to me and spends all of her time with me—she's still fully dependent on me. And as she continues to grow and experience the world around her, she still wants to be like and around me, learning from my reactions, responses, and so forth. I want her to learn to love, be selfless, to follow God—become Christ-like.

As children of God, we can learn so much from our very own earthly children. I'm challenged by this scripture to observe Christ more, mimic Him, and learn from Him in a whole new and intentional way...like a true child! 

We become like those we keep company with. And keeping company with a God who has nothing but extravagant love for us, will transform us into that kind of lover.

I want to LOVE LIKE THAT! And I want to raise my daughters to become extravagant lovers too!

Let's choose to learn, follow, mimic, and be like the One we should be like today. And let's teach our children that kind of love too. This world most definitely needs more Christ-like extravagant lovers. As mothers, our jobs are so vital and make a huge difference. It's such a simple yet profound lesson, sounding easier than it really is. But there's no better lesson to teach our children than to love and be like Jesus.
